Braeden (she/her) is a visual artist based in Portland, Oregon. Originally from Eugene, Oregon, she has also lived in Christchurch, New Zealand, and Knoxville, Tennessee—places that have shaped her artistic perspective and connection to landscape. She studied at the University of Oregon, earning a dual major in Fine Art and Digital Art before completing her BFA in Digital Art at the university’s Portland campus, where she was awarded the David McCosh Memorial Scholarship in Fine Arts. Since graduating, she has focused primarily on painting, gathering inspiration from Abstract Expressionism, German and British Romanticism, and the Sublime. These influences inform her approach to painting, using landscape as a means of expressing emotion and transformation.

Artist Statement

My paintings are a convergence of influences, emotions and experiences from my life and my observations of the world around me. Using the visual language of abstraction and the conceptual foundation of Romanticism, I create mixed-media paintings on canvas. By utilizing naturalistic colors, dynamic textures, and powerful symbolism, I strive to create works that are both visually captivating and emotionally evocative.

I work with a combination of drawing and painting materials. Charcoal, conté crayon, ink, gesso, and acrylic paint are applied in multiple layers over canvas using palette knives, brushes, and industrial trowels. Abstract Expressionism informs my gestural approach, where physical movement and spontaneous mark-making play a crucial role in evoking a sense of motion and energy. The principles of Romanticism emerge through symbolic imagery and motifs that evoke a sense of wonder, awaken the imagination, and explore the awe-inspiring power and mysteries of nature.

Through my work, I seek to capture nature’s raw power, channel my own emotional experiences, and ignite a spark in the imagination of those who view my paintings.

Digital Work

My digital practice brings together imagery, and occasionally text, to create collages that find harmony, delicacy and humor in the pairing. I’ve used imagery from my own photographs, but I primarily source images from old book illustrations. These images are reimagined into something that feels familiar but otherworldly. I build these compositions in Photoshop, which allows me endless opportunity for creation, but I set boundaries in each series. These rules force me to move beyond the obvious and into a space where I supply guesses to the riddles of the page. In finding the beautiful and the bizarre in the everyday, my work remixes what is known into the viewer’s wildest dreams. It pulls us out of reality, challenges us to take another look at our surroundings, and asks the question “what if?”.
